Sony 50 mm f/1.4 with 20 mm extension tube
First photo using my new 50 mm f/1.4 lens with a 20 mm extension tube.
I took this photo at 1/200 hand held, f/22, ISO 100, HVL-F56AM flash with blow up diffuser held next to lens.
It's a mountain laurel.

Cool shot. Also, I was wondering what magnification ratio do you get when you add a 20mm extension tube to this lens?

These individual flowers are very small. Details are visible in the photo that I could not see with my unaided eye. I have no idea what the magnification ratio is. Maybe someone else can do the math.

Every time I look at one of my own photos I think of how I "Should" have taken it to make it better.
This is the same flower I photographed above. This time I used the Sony 100mm f/2.8 macro, no extension tube. F/20, 1/250 of a second. This time I had a friend hold a sheet of white paper next to the flower to reflect a bit of the off camera flask back into the subject. I also used a tripod.
Do you have a preferance?

Hey Dave,
Nice images that you've posted there, they all look very good- kind of difficult to pick which is 'best'- guess it's all down to personal preferences! I think that for me the framing and lighting is better in image 1. I like 2 and 3, but prefer the tighter 'crop' on 1. 3 is good also but a little wide for me- however that's only my view there and YMMV.
Out of interest which of the three do you prefer?

Hi dave, i like all three of your images, but in my opinion the 2nd one is the best by far, i prefer the composition and the lighting all over looks more contrasty and darker still with the detail which i think makes it stand out above the other two, anyway thats my opinion i'd like to know what everyone else thinks on these great pictures
for your comments. It was close for me but I think I preferred the second one. I discovered that 1 and 2 look a lot better on a big screen when I back away from the screen. A breeze caused slight motion in the third one resulting in a slight blur.
Tonight I went to a fancy restaurant with my 50 mm f/1.4 lens. I cranked up the ISO to 800 and was able to capture the mood without using the flash. The waiter offered to take our picture. When he felt the heft of the A100 he remarked, "This feels like a serious camera." When he looked in the view finder he remarked , "This is a good lens." I popped up the flash and the waiter was able to see well enough in the dim light to compose the snap shot and the camera was able to auto focus. I like owning a fast lens.
