To keep or sell a "Beer Can?" That is the question.
I've been comparing some pictures again with my old Minolta AF 70-210 f4 "Beer Can" and my Sigma 100-300 f4 EX DG. No doubt in my mind that the Sigma is superior! Yeah, old news I know. It should be superior. After all, it is new optics designed with today’s technology verses "our" dated, but beloved, "Beer Can."
I have to say that the 70-210 f4 is not as sharp wide open and the chromatic aberrations are ever so noticeable. Being that I do not use it at all anymore I was hoping to get some opinions from you all who wish to give your 2 cents worth to me. Should I keep the 70-210 f4 for sentimental and/or collector reasons or should I sell it off once and for all and be done with it? It's a hard choice being that it is in such good shape. I was thinking of perhaps putting it behind glass as though it were like a trophy.
Any and all opinions welcome.
Regards,
NIKO

You aren't going to get much money from it anyways. At this point the Minolta stuff will continue to gain value based on sentiment/supply/demand alone.
I'd say hold on to it. Once it's gone, its gone.

Carl,
You're probably right. I might as well just put it behind glass as I wanted. Maybe when I'm old enough it could become a museum piece along with me. LOL

If you do decide to sell it, wait till after the A900 is released.
I think the prices will go up, for sure on some lenses.
I think the 70-210 f4 is a great lens and will always hold its value. The 28-135, 50mm 1.7, 100-300APO, etc, will also.
Hard to sell the lenses at all really when they keep going up in value.

I assume that primes lenses will get the biggest bump in price. A prime lens is the surest bet to keep up with a 24.6MP sensor IMO.
I completely agree with what you are saying Brian. The primes have the best chance of shining on a FF camera, and it stands to reason that the primes will apreciate!
Lenses like the 50mm 1.7/1.4 should be in any A mount shooter's kit. Time will tell I guess.
As for the beercan Nikola I would keep it, it's a lovelly lens and a definite classic, as Carl says you won't get huge amounts for it, so it makes greater sense to keep it!

Beercans are already climbing up in price. Selling for well over $200.00 US on eBay. And as the FF a900 hits the street...they'll get higher.
