Street Work in B&W

Street Work in B&W

Just wanted to get some feedback on a few street shots that I attempted on vacation...
I would like to try and do more of this type of shooting.

Thanks in advance,

Hapster

As I stated "elsewhere" :)

Excellent contrast and clarity, an almost liquid feel to them. Good job.

One of these days if I can get a small break from reviewing a bit, I will go do a day down in Laguna.

A telephoto lens is needed if you are shy to ask permission.

Thank you again ;)

I always thought of "street" photography as more of a capture made unaware. Unless I needed a stranger to pose for a particular reason; I think I would be happier just getting the expression that they would normally wear vs them knowing I was shooting them. I guess if I am "caught" I can explain what I was doing and show them the image on the LCD.

Correct me if I am wrong...

Doing this kind of photography; as long as it is for editorial or art purposes (prints, photo books), is okay without needing a model release provided the image was captured in a public place. Only if I intend to use the image in a commercial application (magazine ad) would I need to get a model release signed.

I have looked at this issue on several forums etc. and I am still not exactly clear which is correct...

Thanks for taking a look and the feedback (in both places)

Lets Go Shopping

Last Saturday we were out shopping and strolling in the busy streets in San Francisco. Somebody standing nearby was taking a picture of our 5+ year old kid. My wife noticed that and asked if I saw this too. Then she asked me if that guy (a young man) is a photography student. Our other kid is taking a photography class in school - naturally I'll hear this question from her. I actually said, "I dunno, but that's a $2600 Nikon camera" (D300). Hmm... I think I indirectly got approved to buy more camera stuff!!! Anyways, a couple of seconds later that young man's girlfriend found him in the crowd and went over to him.

Did you approach the photographer

and inquire as to what he was shooting, or why? Did he let you know he was taking shots of your child? Just wondering your take on that...

Do you do any street type shooting?

If you were able to turn that situation into an opportunity to spend money on more camera gear; you should be holding a seminar, or at the very least writing a book ;)

I didn't approach that

I didn't approach that person even though he was like 7 ft away on the side at an angle. He didn't ask - just snapped away. I really didn't mind what he was up to. I actually gave him a nice "have fun there" smile. Right away he must have figured I'm a photo/camera guy too.

I don't do any street shooting... mostly products pix, trade show product/company spy shots, work-related stuff, lately some building-under-construction stuff, plus the usual family events or kids presentations on-stage type of events. (I'm not a professional photographer.)

Ok let me hold the seminar right now! :) Fastest way to get more camera stuff... name the item and have a brother/relative give it to you!! This is declared as a free gift. In exchange, we'll have to give this person another item (this is called courtesy). Everybody all-around is courteous and gets lots of free stuff!! (I'll actually have to be doing this soon.) Void where prohibited. I have a few more silly ones :) :)
