Porsche racing photos....

Hi all,

Continuing on with the car theme I decided to post some images of Porsche 911 GT3s racing. All of the images were taken at Silverstone raceway using a Minolta 5D and Minolta 70-210 beercan. All images hosted on my flickr site (www.flickr.com/photos/woodyjnr). C+C welcome.

Hope you all like these. Despite the focusing on the 5D being a little bit less positive than the newer Alphas, and the beercan being 'slow' to focus, I think the setup did quite well. Be interesting to do the same thing again with either a 70-200 f2.8 SSM or 70-300 SSM G.

Cheers
Andrew

They came out very well indeed, I like em!

Excellent shots, great

Excellent shots, great color, perfect shutter speed.
I have been using the beercan on my new A-700 and so far I am very pleased with it.

Beer Can

The beer can really does produce some fantastic images. It’s pretty darn sharp and the bokeh is quite pleasingly nice. Very nice photos Woody!! Thanks for sharing,
AJ

Outstanding set Andrew!!! A question for you...

did you hand hold or use a mono/tri pod of some sort?

These are fantastic images and just make me happier that I have a great copy of this lens. Do you have any pointers for taking panning shots like this?

Thanks for sharing these...

Hapster

It looks like your setup

It looks like your setup handled the situation quite well. The cars are very sharp and in focus. I can even read the small sponsor stickers the skirts and spoilers. Are you planning to get the 70-300mm SSM G?

Excellent colors and very

Excellent colors and very sharp images, also just love the 911's, the design is unique and it's a car you can use in everyday life and when you want to go to the track, it's more than capable and willing to make you feel like Kimi Raikkonen on Formula 1 series. :D Quite tight crop you've used, sometimes it suits, sometimes it's nice to see also the next/last curve and/or other car(s), perhaps even blurred and the main focus in that one car you're following. But still, these are very good and really enjoyed of them, my favorites so far in this forum. =)

Just drove one of these...

Excellent shots...Just drove one of these the other day for about an hour. Knew I was in trouble when I had to search for the ignition (on the left side). 415+ hp on tap and when this thing whines up it puts a big smile. Wasn't brave enough to turn the traction control off though. Most expensive car I've ever driven at well over $100,000.

Wow. Great response.

Hi all,

Wow, thanks for the great response. I am really please you all liked them.
Ok, to answer a couple of questions:

  • I don't use a tripod or monopod when panning my images. Although lots of people do and recommend them, I find they limit the freedom and stop me getting such a smooth and flowing pan.
  • I might consider getting a 70-300 SSM G in the near future, I'd like to try it first, but from what I've seen I am interested. I'd really like a 70-200 SSM G (who wouldn't ;-) ), but the cost is just too high to justify at the moment.
  • Hapster, I have a couple of pointers that have helped me, so will share them with you. Firstly one must ensure that they continue to follow the car even after the shutter has been pressed- failing to do this will result in a jerky pan. Shutter speed depends on how fast the cars/bikes are moving. I think for these shots it varied from 1/250 sec to 1/320 sec. For slower cars (such as at Santa Pod) I generally go as low as 1/125 sec. Focusing can be tricky, especially if you are waiting for a car. If you pre-focus and lock, it can help. I find that with my current set-up it isn't capable of locking the focus from scratch quickly enough. Hence the need to pre-focus.

Lastly about the crops, yes they are pretty tight, but I wanted to keep the attention on the cars themselves and not the track/background. Also with my positioning at the track I was limited as to what I could shoot. The apex of the corner was just too far away to shoot with the beercan, and I have tried some where the shot is more 'open' but I've yet to perfect it.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.

Cheers
Andrew

Beautiful Porsche racing shots

Love them all, especially the colors, look perfect. Very interesting on the tips, especially about continuing to follow after shutter press. I wouldn't have thought of that one.

thanks for posting those

Eric, many thanks.

Hi Eric,

Many thanks for your kind words. I am really pleased with how the photos have come out, I ended up taking hundreds of photos on that day- including images of the F1 qualifying- and gradually got better as the day progressed. These are some of my favourites from the shoot. Glad you liked them.

Cheers
Andrew
