Tamron 70-300 LD Di Pics!
Well these may not be as scientific as some, but I wanted to post some pics taken with this lens. Right off, I noticed that there is an issue with CA that has been discussed before. For the most part, this can be dealt with in PP. I have had the Sigma 70-300 APO DG before this one. I just was getting nervous that it may break since I now have an A700.
Both lenses are a bit soft at the long end, although it seems to me that the Tamron is sharper. Other than the CA, I like the Tamron more than the Sigma. I like the colors and the bokeh.
The following are just some pics I have taken over the last couple of days. Like I said, nothing scientific here. I have done some PP, some cropping and some resizing. I hope these pics give you an idea of what this lens can do and can maybe help someone looking at this lens.

Thanks for sharing those shots. I have been looking at that lens myself as it fits my budget right now. What have you found to keep the CA down at the long end as I may do some Birding with it? Doesen't look like a bad lens for the price. Really like the moon shot.
I have only had this lens for a couple of days. I have seen some CA, but not really had to deal with it yet. I am hoping that someone else may be able to offer suggestions on how to deal with it.
Thanks, Ron
I've heard of one person complaining that his A700 broke a Sigma lens. Have there been more? I haven't had the A700 long, but it hasn't busted any of the 4 Sigma lenses that have been mounted to it. It seems to me that the Minolta film cameras they were designed for have AF motors as aggressive as the A700. IMO the 7xi and 700si both focus much faster than the A100.
Sony A700, Sony A100(sold), Maxxum 7xi, and Maxxum 700si.
I don't want to get into a discussion about wich lens is better. I don't know. I have the Sigma 70-300. First on my A100 and now (for two weeks) on my A700. For know it works ok. It was the first lens i bought (besides the kitlens i got with the A100) and for now i'm happy with it. I would like to have an 2.8 lens, but no way i'm going to spend that amount of money....
All of my bird photo's i used the Sigma.
Maybe the Tamron is better, i just don't know.

No way am I knocking the Sigma lens. I honestly do not know that much about either one of them!! I have heard of several of the Sigma 70-300 lenses breaking. The one I had worked perfectly and may have for years. I will never know. I had just heard enough issues to make me wonder a bit, so I changed.

I don't think i would buy it now. Knowing what i know (read) now
But i have it....
Just using it, i will see if it breaks down..

Tamron better build and sharpness (through whole range), neutral color.
Sigma, better color, less CA, built cheaper (stripped mine), softer images thru the range, a tad faster focusing as long as the lens doesn't break.
Basically this sums them up.
To keep the CA down on the Tamron, stop down to at least F7.1 and more, there will still be some however, the lens isn't perfect, but its good that CA is easily removed.
My pick of the two, Tamron, even if the Sigma was built better inside, tough call there though. I prefer the sharpness of the Tamron more, very hard to beat at its stellar price. Bokeh is real nice too on both lenses.

Seems like you are happy with the outcome so far.
How much did you buy yours for? I got mine for 125.00 I think brand new. For the price, hard to be the sharpness at 300mm :).
I stop mine down to f11 quite a bit, it helps, but that seems to be where the end of the sweet spot lies.

Is it only the Sigma 70-300 that reportedly breaks?
Sony A700, Sony A100(sold), Maxxum 7xi, and Maxxum 700si.
Tammy 70-300mm was my first "superzoom" and tbh, come summer, my most used lens. The macro mode is amazing for shy, nervy insects - even more so than my Sigma 105mm macro - due to focussing distances...
CA can be a pain, but really only noticeable in high contrast shots - try highlighted water!
But I love it dearly! Just have to wrench it from Ambers A200.....
