Canon trying to catch Sony? A200 Can't be beat
http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20080708_rebel_xs.htm...
In this press release Canon announces that it intends to build another factory in Japan to build DSLR's. The XS is slated to be released at $699.00 with a kit lens only, no body only sales. This is much like the Sony A200 bundle upon release.
However the A200 meets/exceeds the spec's this camera (- live view) and is a full $200.00 less now than the Rebel, I anticipate that if Canon is going to compete with the A200 and Nikon D60, it will have to drop it's prices. The A200 still is the best bet going at $499.00 with a 18-70 Kit lens on Sonystyle.
That's how you compete in market share.
Sony is doing a good job here, it seems.

People will still complain Sony charges too much. :P
Sony A700, Sony A100(sold), Maxxum 7xi, and Maxxum 700si.
Sony seem to have worked out, its a pretty good idea to price the A200 so low, you canont say no. That is good, well done ;-)
However, most of the complaints on prices, are related to other bits, including of course lenses etc. So more work to do, but its easy for me to not buy sony lenses, and just bodies, so you wont see me complain about bargain priced bodies from sony.
I think they are shooting themselves in the foot until they can get more budget lenses on the table, by keeping the used Minolta lens market going, and Sigma and Tamron taking shares :).
Im sure they are reeling about it. The G lenses cost, nothing much can change that, but introduce some middle of the road glass at more competitive prices could change.

Totally agree with you there Carl.
I think they could and should introduce more budget/consumer orientated glass. The current stuff isn't bad and the 55-200 is very well priced compared with the Canikon offerings. It's priced near to both makes non IS/VR lenses so features highly on value there. IMHO they really should get some other 'cheap' lenses out there, such as the 50mm 1.7 (the 50mm 1.4 is great but not exactly cheap).
Give them time...

Sony should use their 11% ownership more and see about rebadging more lenses. Maybe the wide zooms, giving a good, solid and cheap entry into the Sony range. And see about getting A-mount releases at the same time as canikon. Wonder which mount will wait for the 70-200mm f2.8?

After using the Tamron 17-50 I believe that Sony would be wise to gobble up more of Tamron and start rebadging lenses. At the very least they should make sure that Tamron treats the A-mount equally.
Sony A700, Sony A100(sold), Maxxum 7xi, and Maxxum 700si.
would probably be priced at $599-$649 and would feature those dust-catching focus and zoom rings. Careful what we ask for!
I haven't yet bought a Sony badged lens, so I know nothing of the focus and zoom rings. I hope that once Sony attains a large enough presence in the SLR world, lens prices will start to come down.
Sony A700, Sony A100(sold), Maxxum 7xi, and Maxxum 700si.
I don't deny that lens prices are still too high. That's the reason I haven't bought a Sony badged lens yet. It's hard to justify the expense when old Minolta glass, Sigma glass and Tamron glass is just as good and costs hundreds less. It's just that some people on the other big Sony DSLR forum whine that Sony charges too much even when they don't. For all I know these people don't even own a Sony DSLR.
