The Official-SONY "V-5" Petition
No it isn't a real camera .. yet.
But for those of you who want Sony (like me) to continue to develop a competitive pro-level Compact Camera, a successor to the V-3 to compete with Panasonic, Canon, (and now) Nikon, with a full featured full manual control compact with Raw format support.. here is your chance to sound off and start the path to the reality. Don't think I am crazy, it can't hurt to try no matter what.
The guidelines/rules for this petition are simple:
State your name with a yes or no answer if you'd like Sony to continue development, and then state yes/no whether or not you think it will hurt the DSLR market by doing so. Thats it! I will do the first signing of the petition for an example of how to sign. PLEASE follow these guidlines as close as you can, this is a real petition, the more consistent it is, the more seriously it will be taken by Sony.
When we get a big enough list to make some noise (hopefully not camera noise) then I will personally send an urgent email to the right people at Sony with a link to all who have signed this petition requesting a V-3 successor.
Your vote/voice is imperative.
Now that AlphaMountWorld has Sony's attention,
Sony needs to know there is still a market for a camera like this that photographers at all levels would add to a lineup of cameras they already have (this aspect makes very little difference to the other camera segment market share since it would be an additional camera), or for those who for whatever reason prefer a more compact design with a fixed lens.
I see many people wishing for this, and ready to drop cash on a good design, now.
I think we could agree on the following improvements to a V-3 successor (and I'm willing to listen to your suggestions for more)-
1. A wider focal length starting point (28mm minimum)
2. A slight increase in resolution say, 8mp but no more than 10mp
3. The same size sensor (1 1/8") or larger would be best (say, 2/3", APS would require a huge redesign) and a realistic request
4. A user interface much like the entry level Sony DSLR's, or unique and intuitive to the design
5. Continued Raw support
6. Larger LCD screen (2.7" minimum) (perhaps tilting but not bulky!) and at least 230K pixels
7. Continued Range finder styling and handling and excellent top notch build quality
8. Competitive Macro ability
I wanted a short list here, something with just the basics that would be hard to ignore or doubt in the current market climate, that I have seen from others (and myself included) as competitive improvements. Even if this list isn't taken seriously I think we'd all like to see a successor by Sony anyways, right?
So who are you? Do you want a successor like this?
The word has to start somewhere, lets start here.
-Cheers to a new camera, and happy Sony compact users once again!

Why not make it an APS-C sized sensor ( a la R-1 ) ? But no more than 10 megapixels. So proportionately less pixels if the sensor must be smaller. Of course it must support RAW and should be noiseless to at least 800 ISO. Now for the lens: should be fast (2.8) and start at 24mm - though 4x zoom is enough (to avoid CA and soft corners). An optical viewfinder with enough relief for eyeglass wearers is a must for bright ambient light that makes LCDs useless. Quick startup and shutter response times as well. I think Cartier-Bresson would buy that.
Andrew Woodhouse- Yes, I would like a successor, No I don't think it will hurt DSLR sales.

Lets hear ya :) I do think this will do some good, if we speak up about it. Even if you do not own a V3 and want a better compact, lets hear what you have to say.

Nick Dejay (added by mod) Would love to have an updated V-3, A big yes
K.J.Wonnacott (name added by admin) Yes Sony. Please do it. Can't see where it could possibly hurt you in any way.
I'm Daryl Schlesselman. I own two Alphas and 4 Cybershots. I recently purchased a used V3 and am growing quickly fond of it. SLR users are looking for a high quality compact. An upgrade to the V3 would definately on my shopping list.

I've owned several cyber-shot models over the years but my V3 has always been my favourite.
An updated version of the V3 would be on my shopping list without a doubt.

Yes, please!
Would buy V5 as soon as ... just add a good RAW converter/image editing SW - or pack together with Silkypix etc
That way I could use flash equipment I already own on the this compact camera. They could bring out a smaller compact flash that could communicate with the existing line of Alpha flashes. A built-in flash could work the same way. I'm happy with my GX200 but would like to see a bigger f-stop. I think flash compatibility would entice existing Alpha owners towards selecting a Sony should they decide they want a smaller more portable high end camera.

Brennan Houlihan - Yes, I would very much like to see a V3 successor. I love my V3. The folks at Sony created a real gem. As mentioned, I also would like a wider angle lens (at least 28mm), much more important than more telephoto range. Also agree with 8mp max and a large sensor. Image stabilization would be nice too. I don't think it would hurt DSLR sales.
Keep the same body, keep the OVF, keep the fast AF - slightly wider lens - larger sensor and maybe even a fixed fast prime - but just do it faster than the sigma dp-1. Maybe even sealed body for outdoor users!
recently I spoke with Sony a bit on the subject of the V3.
To their surprise, I noted the V3 is probably one if not the, most popular fully featured compacts of all time.
I don't have figures on how it sold, but it seemed to do pretty darn well. Nowadays, it could do even better.
Cheers to all who have participated thus far, lets spread the word if you can and keep this going!
