Sigma 70-200 lens
APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM for Pentax and Sony
Has anyone tried this lens with the A700? Based on the Dyxum reviews it looks like a reasonable alternative to the Sony 70-200 G at less than 1/2 the price. I want a low light level lens for sporting events. I have a Sigma 100-300 F/4 & a Sony 70-300 G lens but the G lens lacks the light gathering power and the 100-300 is too large except for birding or the like ( works great for long distance - I can discern a 1/4 inch diameter hole at 120 yds ).

Hi Bruce,
New here so I thought I'd tell you about the lens I have. After lots of research, I bought the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I shoot mostly equine events. I tried a Sigma but they tend to be a little warm and they don't seem to have the quality that the Tamron produces. The only con about the Tamron that I have would be the slower focus in low light conditions. Depending on the type of sports you shoot and the venue (indoor / outdoor) the Tamron is a serious consideration. Hope that helps. :-)

Hi Bruce,
I haven't used the Sony fit version, but I did use the Canon fit version on a EOS 5D back in 2005 / early 2006 and it was mightily impressive. The build quality is very good and the focusing was swift and accurate. I realize that the lens in question is the newer version compared with what I used, but it's hardly likely to be inferior!
If you need quick and or silent AF then the Sigma would be well worth a look, I have always been impressed with Sigma products, they've a high price/performance ratio.

Hey Butch,
I have this lens and use it with the A700 and I love it... it is very fast focusing, very sharp around f/4-f/8... and gives you a nice distance on the APC sensors. I would highly recommend it based on its price, I think I got mine for right around $799 USD
Thanks for the comments. I just ordered the lens and a UV filter. I can't wait to try it out.

Butch,
I am in the same dilema you where on which lens to buy.
Did you buy the Tamron or the Sigma 70-200 f2.8?
Can you comment on the following as it varies depending upon the review.
> How is the focusing inlow light - low light being shadows on a landscape scene?
> Just how noisy is the autofocusing?
> Which camera body are you using this on?
> How would you rate this lens ?
Your comments are appreciated.
Thanks for your input in helping me decide.
