Histogram

Histogram

Hi,

I have a problem with the histogram in my A700, it's different than the histogram on my computer in Photoshop raw CS4.
When I take a picture with my camera it looks good on the screen of the camera and the histogram looks fine to, but when I download it to my computer and open it, the picture is way over-exposed and the histogram is different. I can use the exposure comp. every time but on my screen of my camera it looks than to dark, or change the exposure in photoshop. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my camera?

Thanks for your help
Claudine

Brightness of the LCD screen?

Hi Claudine!

I'm not an expert in this matter. I use the histogram way too little. What I can imagine however is that you may have accidentally set the brightness of your LCD to a high(er) level than 'normal'. This can easily be checked:
Switch on the A700, keep the Disp button pushed down for some time. It will then show the display brightness setting which can then be adjusted according to your needs. If it's not that, perhaps somebody else has a clue. In that case I'm very curious what causes this.

Cheers

AndreK

RAW or jpeg?

Hi.

Are you shooting RAW? And opening RAW files in your computer?

The camera does not show raw files but jpeg. So whatever you see on the screen is not excatly the same as the RAW file that you open in your computer. And yes, this is normal. :)

Histogram Problem

Claudine,

Nothing is wrong with your camera. However, Photoshop on the other hand seems to default in such a way that "our" photos tend to look overexposed or underexposed all too often. It's an annoyance that I have had to live with since I started using CS2. I tried making my own default settings, but I end up with the exposure always going one way or the other so I just left the Exposure and the Brightness at default.

Since you shoot RAW like I do just do what you need to do to get the photo to look correct with whatever software you choose to use. However, still use the tools that you have on the A700. Those tools are there to help you not defeat you.

Happy Shooting!

PS - On a side note: I have noticed that after I got the Zeiss 16-80 the contrast of that lens is so high that I find it often reads as overexposed in Photoshop over my other lenses; particularly my KM 28-75 f2.8. However, it still depends on the scene I am shooting for that to happen.

histogram

Thanks, I didn't had this problem with the A100. The colors and histogram on the raw file on the LCD screen was exactly the same in the software (photoshop) on the computer.

Ideal is that when you see your photo on your LCD screen on the camera and it looks good, you have the same in photoshop (CS4), what you see is what you get, now I don't have that. I have it with all my raw pictures.

I was thinking to bring the camera to Sony to repair, but If this is normal well..... I guess I have to live with it.

Thanks
Claudine

Thank you.
to bad...... a lot of work in photoshop or I have to use the exposure comp.

Hi Andre,

Thanks, the brightness of my LCD is on 'normal'.
It seems to be normal for raw files, a lot of work in photoshop is the only solutions for now.

Histogram

Hey Claudine,

For awhile there I was ready to throw out my A700 and forever rethink my photography skills!! Every time I opened a RAW photo in Lightroom, YIIIIIKES!!! (I literally said that, and maybe a bit more everytime!!) I was becoming increasingly frustrated, then I remembered the software that came with the camera. Yup, you guessed it, I now happily open my images in IDC and make some adjustments there, then after I'm done with that, I import them directly from IDC to photoshop. I think you will be much happier with your RAW results opening them in IDC. Let me know how it works out for you.
