a300: Looking for help before I send it for repair: Flash exposure

Hi Gang,

My a300 is having a flash exposure problem with the built in flash. About ninety percent of the time, indoor flash exposures are badly underexposed...just plain dark really. It does flash, but as said, provides consistently poor exposures. Perhaps a coincidence, this began right after I was showing my son how the Kelvin temperature scale worked. I had changed those settings a few times to show him warm/cold etc......Thereafter, this problme began. I went through the re-setting of the default procedure several times, just in case I had not gotten something back to normal, but the problem persists.

Another note. My Minolta 2500 D seems to provide proper exposures still. Go figure.

Any help with this problem before I resort to boxing it up?

Skippy

Hi Skippy can you post any samples?

Hi Skippy, any chance of posting some samples so that we can see the problem a little more clearly?

Flash problem

Sure Andrew,

I'd be happy to post. Could you give me the step by step on landing a photo in the right spot when I post it?

Skippy (I have been a head waiter myself)

Sure, no problem.

Hi Skippy,

If you want to post a photo then you will need to have it hosted somewhere first (flickr or pbase etc), then you can link from that file to the site. To do that you would simply copy the image's URL (right click and 'copy image address) into the post. You will be able to see a preview of this before you post.

If you get stuck or need any additional help then feel free to PM me.

Cheers

Skippy, When you post, post unedited files or ...

If you shoot in RAW, use the IDC software that came with the camera to convert the RAW files to jpegs, then post the jpeg.

Why do I say this? Because the EXIF data in the unedited jpeg file will help us diagnose the issue.

FWIW, sometimes Flikr strips away some of EXIF data. (I'm not sure why)

I will be posting JPEG, but....

I don't understand about "hosting" my photos. I can't send the photo directly from one of my files....my documents, my pictures, etc.? Please stick with my on this. Once I get this, my abilities to enjoy and use this website will be much more flexible. Pretend you are explaining this to an aphid or something. I'd like to get this posted for you, and see what you all think.

ADI Issue??

Maybe double-check if the camera set to ADI or TTL mode for the flash... If it's ADI, then set it to something-TTL. The ADI mode appears to only work if it's already bright enough but we still like the flash to blink. Other than this, maybe the subject/person is too far away such that the built-in flash just can't reach...

End of the rope

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with this. I still don't understand how to post a photo. That is a subject for another time. More pressing is this. The flash has ceased to fire entirely. Now it just doesn't work at all. Through SonyStyle I processed a repair order, and I am told to send my camera to Precision Camera Repair. Look this up. The problem is that Precision Camera Repair has some VERY scary reviews. Frankly, I am afraid to send it. What does one do in this circumstance?

Reset

your camera has a full reset to resore it to its original settings. I would try this first before sending it in for repair. Heck, Call Sony.......dont cost nothing to talk to Sony!!
