Chris welcome

to our abode.

How about the 18-250 (first choice) and 16-105 (second choice)?

Thanks! Carl your reviews

Thanks! Carl your reviews on the a300 and the a350 really helped. The sal 18-250 looks like the one based on your review. But you said the a350 may out resolve this lens?

Hi Chris

Yeah it might. Doesn't mean you still wont get great resolution.

If that is your main concern I'd lean towards the 16-105, or even the 16-80.

I was more concerned about your overall needs, vs. pure resolving power.

Great thing about dslrs, you can always get another lens :)

hey Chris you can choose from a bunch of minolta lenses

there's a pretty good database of sorts, over at dyxum

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp

And yes the beercan is a big favorite of many, there's a post here Beercan with background about it.

As far as Flickr, it is a popular photo hosting/sharing site http://www.flickr.com/ it's fairly popular, there are many others for hosting as well.

have fun

MY first trip to the beach with my a350/sal 18-250.

It was good time the sal 18-250 is very nice, and I see why the zoom should be a little hard to turn now. I am thinking of buying a minolta af 50mm 1:1.7 (22) lens can you share some thoughts on this. HERE ARE SOME NEWBIE SHOTS.

I like it a lot

The colors are great. You broke some rules by having the subject face away from the camera and in the center of the frame. Yet, it works for me because it tells a story of an awe struck little girl, ready for play and seeing the ocean for the first time. Good job with good equipment.

Don't risk it.

Just take the 18-70 kit lens. It will take perfectly good images in good light. Its very cheap to replace so you won't worry about the sand when taking shots of your little girl. freedom of movement is vital with children. I think this is a very good range lens, the IQ is not so good wide open but that beach light will more than compensate for it.

I agree with Glyn. The 18-70

I agree with Glyn. The 18-70 takes wonderful pictures and is on my camera most of the time. I alway have the other lenses nearby in case I need to sneak up
on something or someone, i.e. the beercan.
I plan on getting the SAL 18-300 asap and I think it will do for 95% of my pictures.

Have fun.

So don't take $600 dollar lens to the beach.

Sounds like I should get my money back and buy a beercan It has a internal zoom right. I just wanted to avoid changing lenses on the beach. Well I have 30 days to test the sal 18-250.

I do all the time

If you change your lens do it under a towel, and never in the wind. Besides, with the 18-250 on, why would you need to change lenses? ;)

serial number search for minolta lenses

Does any one know how to check a minolta serial number?

18-70 works

If you're nervous, I agree -- take the 18-70. You're going to be in really bright light so you can stop down the aperture. I would think you'd use wider angles most of the time, unless you want to photograph seagulls or boats offshore. Hmm. OK, the 18-250 sounds like the best idea.

I only took my A100 to the beach once and didn't have any issues, and I swapped lenses a lot. However, I had a chair to sit on, and I didn't play in the sand and it wasn't blowing around. (Heavy sand? :-) ) So, do what you want and take your chances. Maybe you mess something up maybe not.

But many people have posted good remarks about the 18-250, and even when you're not at the beach, you may enjoy not swapping lenses.

Lens serial number should be on the lens

probably look for white lettering, I'm not sure by check what you meant exactly though.
