After months of wanting it,

After months of wanting it, I finally went out yesterday and bought the HVL-42-AM flash and I love it so far. I haven't put it to serious use yet. But all the test shots look good.

A700 and Flash compatability

I am really upset right now finding out that Sony is not longer selling my expensive HVL-F56AM flash that I purchased for my a100.
I looked up the access. for the A700 (thinking about upgrading) and my flash is not listed and they have a NEW 58 model!

Is this a common practice of all manufacturers? If this is the case, I will not bother learning this flash which have been sitting or any other flash!

These people must think we all have money trees!

Okay, done with rant ... can someone please tell me that my flash will work with the A700? (-:

Karen in Austin, Texas

Hi Karen welcome to AMW.

Firstly welcome to AMW,

Yes the flash you have will work perfectly with the A700 and indeed all Alpha DSLRs. Manufacturers will always update their flashes as they will any other product. The fact that they have replaced the HVL-F56AM with the F58AM doesn't mean the F56 becomes a bad flash! The HVL-F56AM was a re-badged Minolta flash and as such was due an upgrade.

The HVL-F56AM is a great flash and well worth getting to know.

A700 and Flash compatability

Thank you Andrew for the welcome and the heads up!
I was not expecting a positive response. Yippee!

Okay, back to practicing with my flash. I am helping to take photos of a family wedding this coming weekend and it is inside.
Ask me if I want to be a wedding photographer ... NOT!

Best,
Karen in Austin

No problem Karen,

Hi Karen

No problem you are more than welcome.

A900

Would my flash be compatible with the new 900?

I just read the specs on this camera ...wow!

Thanks,
Karen

It will fit and work.

Yes, your flash will fit and work on the A900. The only thing it won't do is provide ratio control for multiple flashes or act as a trigger. For that you would need the HVl-F58AM. But in effect, the flash will fit and work well.

A900

Thanks for the information on the limitations.

I was just reading the specs on DP Review (use to going there (-:) and they just list my flash as compatable. This camera has no built in flash so you would have to use an external unless you were doing studio work with lights I assume.

External flash (optional) • Sony HVL-F58M
• Sony HVL-F56M
• Sony HVL-F42M
• Sony HVL-F36M
• Macro Twin Flash Kit HVL-MT24AM
• Ring Light HVL-RLAM
• Off camera flash shoe FA-CS1 AM

Thanks again ...
Karen

The FA-CS1AM is an on camera

The FA-CS1AM is an on camera hot shoe adapter.

Actually, the FA-CS1AM is

Actually, the FA-CS1AM is the OC cable to Maxxum shoe adapter.

You're thinking of the FA-HS1AM - which is the shoe adapter (and which now will finally have ISO shoe on it for PW and other radio transmitters)

1st generation items

Sony tends to introduce new items and quickly make them obsolete. The first generation items seem to be around for 1.5 years and something always new pops up. This has happen to me with lots of other sony items. I have the same flash for a year now. Great flash...but itching for a new one for my A700...I gave my sis the A100 that the flash was for. Good luck with the wedding shooots~~~
