I'm sure you were ready to get one yourself, anyways .

By the way, hardly any CA at any focal length that I can find so far...much like the Zeiss 24-70

Very very nice Carl!! How much are these puppies? That is the first question that generally always gets me in a fair amount of trouble. I too am looking forward to some more samples.
Ron
And thank you.
This lens should quell some of the bellyaching about lens prices. Performs at a much higher cost.

Thanks Carl, I have been looking at this lens and I think this picture has sold me!Now I just need to find the mony and learn how to use my a200.

Carl, do you have any similar pictures on the ole hard drive shot with the 18-250? I realize they are wildly dissimilar lenses, but am curious about results for casual shooting.

Carl,
I know it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges but for me the obvious choice will be between this lens and the 70-200 2.8. Could you comment on these two when you write your review?
For a comparison, I don't have the 70-200 G 2.8 unfortunately at this time, maybe in the future I will be able to do that though.

I am sure I have some shots taken of him by that lens, Ill have a poke around the hard drive(s) and see what I can come up with.

Are you still messing around with film cameras? I'd be interested to see some film shot with the 70-300 G.

It is in stock in BHphoto, same price as sony.com. Adorama, out of stock. In ebay, somebody in HongKong is setting three but at almost $1000.00. Too much of a difference, don't you think?
take care all, Juan.

Yes I am, if I have the lens long enough I thought I'd try it out on the Maxxum 9 , or 7 :)

Hi Carl,
Thanks for posting these- samples still seem to be few and far between! From what I can tell from the images posted on the web, it seems like it will be a very popular lens. It seems nice and sharp and as you say has little CA. Ok, so it's not a fixed aperture lens, but with SSS I'd imagine it's less needed.
Cheers
Andrew

Here's another shot, showing some bokeh and lack of any CA.
Shot with A700, right out of camera, first shot resized for mercy. ISO 400 so there is some noise present, keep that in mind.

For full size junkies :).. don't forget 400ISO so there is some noise. Shot on A700
I cant find any CA, Bokeh is delicious.

Carl,
Sigma has a 100-300 f/4 EX DG IF lens. Little bit better throughput, more lenses but same number of groups. Any idea how this might compare to the 70-300 G? It also cost $300 more & weighs more.
Butch
I think that the Sigma lens is about the only thing comparable at the moment and was seriously considering it...constant f/4 but more weight...should have comparable sharpness...both sharp at the long end...
My lens did not ship as promised...back ordered with email saying shipping on 6/2...I have a feeling it won't ship then either...

Internal focus and zoom as well :). It did great in the imatest lab, but not good enough to sway me for the price. I also don't like that the Sig starts at 100mm, I find that very "unversatile".

...I read David Kilpatrick's first impressions which was a good read...he had the same reaction as Carl...looks like this lens will get a lot of praise...

I'm going to try the zoo this weekend with it...the Fedex truck will be here this afternoon...
Carl, Any advice on how to sleep with this lens next to you? Perhaps in the case so it isn't so cold? LOL

I too, really wanted the 70-300G but my impatience got the better of me (as usual) and I ended up getting the 70-200G.
