TAMRON OTB issues?

TAMRON OTB issues?

I hate to be a spoil sport ... oh, c'mon ... but, TAMRON has really been a litltle more than annoying with some of the QC issues I have been privy to (by buying the lenses) and I just wanted to know if other folks were seeing the same kind of issue.

Today, I received my new SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens via UPS from B&H. This the second such lens I have bought, the first one being for my late EOS 20D, back in March 2006. I took that new lens to United Camera repair and found it "soft." Today, when I pitted this newest lens (SONY-mount) against the TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DiII LD Aspherical (IF), I found the focus "Soft", again!

Guys, this isn't funny. It belies a record of poor workmanship.

Now, I'm not painting with a broad brush, here, as the SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DiII LD Aspherical (IF) (of which I also had two copies) has been absolutely perfecto-mundo in focus. In fact, I just ran it up against a CZ 16-80 ... and it held its own. You would have to be pretty darn picky, in my book, to make a big deal about the differences.

Anyway, getting back to the poor QC on the 28-75. Has anyone else been troubled with this lens' OTB performance? I am going to have it repaired, tomorrow, under the mfr defect clause.

My first copy of the 17-50mm

My first copy of the 17-50mm produced soft, out of focus looking images. The replacement copy was a-ok, though. I know I am not the only one who thinks they have received a bad copy of that lens.

Soft images

Hi Don,

That is pretty rotten luck you've had there- getting two copies (and for different mounts) that were both soft! Hopefully it will be sorted out quickly under warranty. Have you got any samples that we can look at on the site?

I guess all manufacturers have the odd QC issues, but if you've had two lenses then it's either really really bad luck or a potential issue. I must admit, I haven't heard of too many QC issues with this lens...

Please keep us all posted, it will be interesting to see how fast they respond.

Regards
Andrew

Same here

My 17-50 was very bad when I got it. The replacement is perfect, though.

Going from bad to worse?

Okay guys ... I have ordered two lenses, one after the other, from B&H Video. Of course, B&H had nothing to do with the 28-75 having front focus issues. Fine.

Today, I receive the TAMRON SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD lens, via UPS ... the very same company that delivered the 28-75 a day earlier. The delivery guy comes to my door and presents me with this:

Click to raise

Uh ... guys, this look bad.

I had the UPS guy stick around as I documented this "opening" and happily, only a corner of the actual lens box took the hit.

Click to raise

Anybody else feel a little queasy about "home delivery?"

Home delivery...

Hey Don,

Good job you made the delivery guy stick around! That doesn't look too good as far as the package goes, however the lenses themselves are usually pretty well protected-hopefully yours will be ok.

Back to the question on home delivery, yes seeing stuff like that does make me a little uneasy about home delivery, and that goes to show how important it is to buy from a reputable dealer, and one that uses insured delivery.

Spoke with local retailer

I had decided to no longer purchase my pricey lenses from distant retailers. If I cannot get it locally, I guess I'm not interested. UPS should have taken better care of the package. Lord knows what they put on top of it ... and willful distruction of pricey goods, to me, is just wasteful ... and more than that, avoidable.

Like I said ... if the local stores don't carry it, in all of Chicago, then I simply will not order it, any more. I have more respect for my time than that. Not to say the cost of return shipping ... if the driver leaves the package and I wind up just STUCK with it.

If SONY wants to sell the Carl Zeiss or "G" line ... they should outfit at least one store in the region with the selections, not just one store (New York) in the entire country! What's with that ... especially in light of the possible (and obvious) damage that can be done by these shipping companies?

Who's with me???

You are right!

Sorry to see that happen... I had a problem with 4 computers delivered by ups as well everyone of them smashed.. And your right Sony needs a better network for delivery..
Hope it all works out..
See YA!

OT.... Are there any camera

OT....

Are there any camera shops in the Chicago area that you would recommend? I will probably be up there once or twice this summer.

Recommended retailers

Calumet Photographic has several higher end SONY lenses ... but, only in their Chicago stroe, not the Oakbrook branch. I, personally, wiped out the only SAL 135mm f/1.8 CZ they had. So ... call first. LOL
