Use of Program (P) on a350 command dial

Use of Program (P) on a350 command dial

With apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I could not find it.

I have read the manual and, as a newcomer to DSLR photography, I do not understand properly either how to use "P" or what it's benefits are. Originally, I had assumed that I could set things up, a bit like the scene presets for Portrait, Landscape, etc as P1, P2 so that when I was doing a particular type of activity, the various settings would be automatically recalled. Reading the manual, it seems that you can only have one program setting until you change it or turn the camera off.

Can anyone help clarify this subject for me or refer me to an appropriate article.

I think of P(program) as an automatic mode with more manual control.

I don't know anything the setting recall.

the P mode is nearly same as

the P mode is nearly same as the Auto Mode

you can adjest the Creative Style
and the flash work only when you push the flash button on the side

if you turn the dial (next to the shutter) the mode turns into Ps, so you can adjest also the shutter speed
