Popular Photography Hint at A700 Replacement

Popular Photography Hint at A700 Replacement

In the new November edition (and layout) of Popular Photography, they hint at a new A700 coming out soon. I'll save you the suspense by quoting below, where PopPhoto were discussing the A700 currently as being a feature packed bargain ....rated 3.5 stars out of 4 in their new "The Guide" section:

"....may be an oldie, but it's still a goodie for its rugged build, fine imaging, and thoughtful design. We strongly suspect Sony will bring out a replacement soon."

Nope I didn't miss it, I don't miss stuff that is said about Sony in any of the magazines I subscribe too.

Do I think this has merit? Yes. Why do I think this has merit?

Popular Photography is almost first to know about any new product on almost every major manufacturers list because of the sheer volume of its distribution and reputation for reportage. At this time I do not personally know about an A700 replacement from Sony, although I am treated pretty well as "press" by Sony by all means, there are some who get first dibs. Thats just the way of it.

And if I did know something for certain, I would be bound not to say anything at all, not even a forum post such as this.

For Popular Photography to make such a strong suggestion tells me quite a bit. It's highly doubtful they would make such a strong statement such as that without some sort of inside knowledge, of which they could not of course confirm nor deny. Luckily, I do occasionally have whispers in my ear from sources other than Sony, and right now the silence is deafening.

Calm before the storm, perhaps.

Between these two factors I conclude that the A700 replacement indeed is going to come sooner than we can probably expect. Look for rumors to spring up as a result of this posting elsewhere on the net, but don't forget where you heard it first (that being Pop Photo, and well ....).

Cheers,

Carl

I got a chuckle

from the the blue stamp on the picture, "Getting Old". Still is and continues to be a great camera. I think it maybe really hard to ever sell my a700, or my a100.

This is great news! Sooner

This is great news! Sooner then expected? So perhaps late November to catch Christmas? Wishful thinking...

You guys know I'm waiting for this!

I'm going to lose my hair, I need my Christmas gifted, it's the only way I can convince my wife. I also would have to upgrade her first generation iPhone to spark the deal from Santa.

Also, Tom Bonner's "Digital Field Guide" is ok, but has a lot to be desired, just in case someone is thinking of sending the 19.99 from Borders (minus all there silly discounts). It is more of a preview book. Details about how to set up a good shoot it is not.

Also, believe it or not you can get an A700 from Circuit City online for $700 with the 18-70 kit lens (I know it's not the standard kit lens). Yes, I know your going to say it went bankrupt, and yes your right, but check it out, it's hard to explain, but it's coming back, weird? Look in the dslr overstock section.

Not hard to explain

As it explains on the Circuit City website, Systemax Inc., "a leading multi-channel retailer of computers, electronics, and industrial products," purchased the Circuit City brand, trademark, website and other assets back in May and relaunched the Circuit City website. It's nice to have another Sony online retailer out there.

a700 replacement

Went to a photog expo last weekend and spoke for a few minutes with a Sony rep. I asked him if a replacement for the a700 was coming out soon and he gave a definite "yes" answer. The rep said that he wasn't sure of any timeline or specs but that based on what they did with the a550, he thought the replacement would build on those.

L.

Incremental lineup

That makes total sense.

For a long while I have realized that Sony is creating a lineup with an incremental feature list, the higher up the more/and more advanced features.

The A700 replacement is going to be very interesting to many people who are wondering just where Sony is going in the DSLR industry in my opinion. It could be a bomb ready to explode, or a World Cup trophy to Alpha shooters...

or, somthing inbetween.

Are you still thinking that

Are you still thinking that there will be more than one A7xx, Carl?

Not thinking that no

But there could be an A7xx and A800, right?

I see enough room $wise to do this, and the gap is clearly there.

Please tell us more about

Please tell us more about the a800, Carl. (Is this a superset of the a750 or a subset of the a850?) Thanks.

Interesting development

I don't have that Pop Photo yet...but 'soon' could still be February. Before year end would make more sense given the A700's discontinuation, since they'd fill the void in the lineup right as the channel dries up.

By the way, that A700 at circuitcity.com is an open box deal. The 'fine' print:

THIS PRODUCT IS AN OPEN BOX RETURN

For a variety of reasons customers may return a product after opening and, in some cases, using it briefly. We usually send these products back to their manufacturer but sometimes, after we inspect the product, we decide it’s better to offer it for sale at a discount then return it to its manufacturer. We put these products through a rigorous 7 point check to make sure they are in good condition and working properly. There may be a minor blemish and occasionally the original manuals may be missing but you can buy with confidence knowing the product is covered by its manufactures warranty and support. Don’t delay; open box products are priced right, available in very limited quantities and sell out fast.

Still not to bad a price given their 30 day guarantee. By the way, this company (Systemax) owns TigerDirect.com and CompUSA.com as well (the A700 open box is available from both of those places too).

Back on-topic...

Hmmm Popular Photography,

Hmmm Popular Photography, 97% adverts..2.5% speculation, 0.5% readable content.
Panasonic G1, camera of the year..
The lens reviews where every one of them is great..

I rest my case ;-)

That was a C.O.S a bit here but

ok.. yeah, they do make quite a bit of money on adverts and such. Apparently its a system the works for them or they wouldn't be so Popular. Maybe Sony is taking the same approach with cameras, not trying to appease those who know better, but the larger crowd that actually will make them money.

Yet, that aside, they are in the know.. big time. Don't think they aren't which is really the point here I am making about them. :)
