Sir Howard Stringer (CEO of Sony) in Businessweek

Sir Howard Stringer (CEO of Sony) in Businessweek

I was recently having a conversation with my Dad about CES and if the 3D TV’s will actually take off. About a week later he sent me a clipping of an interview with Sir Howard in Businessweek. (From the week of January 18th 2010)

The majority of the interview was about the advent of 3D in the consumer market place and how Sony will handle it. He also talked about how Sony is dealing with the downturn in the economic world and their competition with Samsung. All in all it was a very interesting interview and gives a very small glimpse into Sony's overall plan for the year.

One paragraph in particular caught my eye, and how it is worded may bode well for the Alpha line up and really Sony in general.

(Charlie Rose) Q : What will you say at CES about Sony's product lineup?

(Sir Howard) A : This year we're going to swamp the marketplace with innovation and new products, and we're going to particularly focus on 3D because we have so may assets compared with anybody else - from cameras to projectors to 3D video games to TV's to Blu-ray - everything can be 3D with us. Size finally matter again, so that is an advantage we intend to demonstrate at CES.

True Sir Howard is really just talking about 3D but the comment of "Swamping the marketplace with innovation and new products" line maybe a good sign of things to come from Sony and hopefully the Alpha lineup.

Thoughts?

My old boss used to say,

My old boss used to say, "Show me the money", talk is cheap, he liked results, so do I with products. I like the sniper approach myself, careful, considered killer shots aimed at specific points in the market, a far better way of making a bang. Quality v quantity, and I vote for quality every time.
A lot of this 3d stuff sounds a bit gimmicky to me, but hey..we'll see soon enough.
I want to see less Sony products, esp DSLR's, and much more thought put into each model, and the line up overall.
This swamp the market reminds me of the Union charge at Fredericksburg, you just know a mass frontal assault isn't going to work. Smart thinking works in a way sheer numbers don't. Ditto for business..

You hit the nail on the head.

I agree a much better thought out approach is always best. Sony has already proved to us that their way is the shotgun approach. Flood the market with so so stuff and something will stick (ie. the a230-a550 from last year). Though I do question the marketing, atleast in the Alpha line. Really there isn't any, and the only places to buy above an a330 is camera stores. Nothing like getting your name out there! :-D

But I do like the "new innovation" quote.

making a swamp of the market?

The term 'swamping' has always amused me, as it means something else to me than it does to the speaker. I hope Sony revitalizes the Alpha brand and cleans up their lineup.. and 'swamping' surely isn't my answer to what needs doing. He was talking in generalities and about many product lines, of course.

Maybe an Alpha Mavica that records to Blu-Ray is in the works? If so, why not 3D? :^)

Well the entry level line-up

Well the entry level line-up is swamped, and maybe we have more to come, A6xx, new A7xx. I'd rather forget the 6 entry models myself, as not a single one has any appeal to me. I'd go one further, this "swamping" of models has had the reverse effect with me, I'm now paying a lot more attention to what other brands are offerings, and it's pretty likely that my next purchase won't be anything to do with A mount. That's the price a company pays for swamping and not thinking about their line up. All they had to do was shove a CMOS sensor into a better built A200 body, and whack MLU and a DOF preview on there. That's it...instant buy. What was so hard about that then??

Unless Sony deliver something damn good A6xx at a reasonable cost, I'd say a fair few users will just shuffle off to other makers. Frankly I'm getting rather sick of Sony dictating what users at certain price points want. It's arrogant and out of touch with their user base.

Giving the DEVIL his due ...

SONY has been defiant, almost, in their approach to the current user base. Sure, they have an awful smelly "swamp" of introductory DSLR cameras. I cannot say I would recommend them to anyone I know, basically because you outgrow them so darn fast, it is hardly amusing. The a500 was the only worthwhile "intro" to me, to be reasonable, anything else is toylike, a "toy" with the capability of attaching an interchangeable lens to it.

The a500-series is really where most people should START in my opinion. It has all the necessary basics to be worthwhile and useful for a couple of years. Anything less ... is throwaway. I mean, you are eventually going to want a500 (that is, of course, barring all the higher models).

I know there are those who may disagree. Believe me, I can wait. You will see for yourself. The 200 and 300 series get pretty tiring, pretty quickly ... as I have witnessed in the migration of the past year. The problem is, a lot of folks are leaving SONY ... and grabbing other brands. Hey, I am not losing sleep over that, either, there are only so many retired Minolta lenses out there to be had.

The thrust of this posting is ... if you are not buying an a500/a550 ... you are wasting your money. I guess that is pretty plain and simple an opinion, eh?

Don't like mine? YOU, my friend, are certainly entitled to your own "experienced" one. The SONY cash register is at the end of the counter.
