Sony sounds off in 2008- A200, A300, A350, and two great looking lenses!

Been waiting for this for a while, have us? And as many can now see, Sony is really on the move. While Sony still has more to introduce this year, it looks like they are scoring a shutout so far. It isn't over yet folks.

-A full frame 24-70 2.8 Zeiss artillery shell, no doubt to mate to your "Flagship"

-A very popular focal length 70-300 f4.5-f5.6, but now designated "G" for superior optical quality at a very affordable price!

-Live View done right and competitive resolution, they aren't behind at all, right up front in fact.

-An R-1 "replacement alternative" finally for those who have been waiting years. And now, you have interchangeable lens and DSLR speed to boot.

-And congrats to the P/S users, and new users that have been waiting for these cameras to come for what seems like a long time.

We will be posting a comparison breakdown here tonight on our site, stay tuned!

Very interested in your impressions of the 24-70 2.8 Zeiss

Carl -- First, I wanted to let you know that I've appreciated your reports from the PMA, as well as your thoughtful comments on DPReview.

I assume that you will have a full report on the new 24-70 Zeiss lens when you are able to. I probably am able to justify one Zeiss level lens, and am thinking that this one might be it, since it seems a good one for landscapes, as well as portraits. My main camera is A700, and do not plan on getting a FF one in the near future, but maybe a few years down the line. So I would especially be interested in whether this would be a great lens to have on the A700. I realize that for the same price, I could get couple of lenses that are just as fast -- Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 (or the 28-75mm 2.8) and the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8, and have a few hundred dollars still left over. So I'd be interested in getting your opinion as to whether the Zeiss is worth getting, and your reasoning for why or why not.

My current inventory of lenses:

  • Sony 50mm 1.4 (indoor flashless)
  • Tamron 90mm 2.8 (for macro and portrait)
  • Tamron 17-250mm (general walk around until/if I get the Zeiss)
  • Tamron

200-500mm (for birds)

Thanks.

STak, about the 24-70 ZEISS

Thank you thank you :)
Glad I help, I really try too.

Unfortunately I don't have a detailed report now, and I won't until the lens is available and I can do a review on it.I'll tell you what I know. I was going to do a preview on the lens, but I've decided not too at this point, and wait for the lens and do a full review instead.

The 24-70 is expensive and heavy. If that doesn't bother you, read on. :)

It is built like an artillery shell, and I expect the optical quality to be as good or better than the build. It has a 1:4 mag ratio on a FF sensor, and that would be increased on an APS-C sensor, with a change in the FOV and equivalent focal length.

The 24-70 would gain by using an APS-C sensor with a longer focal length, more magnification, more DOF, and using more of the sweet spot of the lens.

The 24-70 would lose by using an APS-C sensor by not having a 24mm wide angle view, and a narrower FOV.

The good side is that a lens like that won't depreciate in value very much, and would be an excellent long term investment. If you had both the A700 and Flagship bodies, you could have the best of both worlds.

Hope that helps you, and welcome aboard the SSS-AlphaMountWorld
