Sony Alpha at PMA- The complete experience
Sony at PMA: A strong presence
As soon as I came down the escalator into the showroom floor and saw Sony's booth, I realized that I was in for a real treat (admittedly, this is my first PMA experience and my enthusiasm will show throughout my report). When I walked over to the front of the booth you see here, I realized what I had come for was on the other side. However, as I approached the booth the first display that I noticed was the "Long Lens" SSM display showing the 300mmG, 70-200G, and the brand new 70-300G (second shot) which seems to be perfectly paired with the A700.

Out of curiosity...
Thanks for lending us your eyes, ears and mouth here, Carl.
Just out of curiosity - did you get the feeling that those two guys in the booth were familiar with what is discussed at internet forums about Sony DSLRs? Did they immediately recognize Carl G. from these forums (they should, if they read them I suppose)?
Thanks again.
Well
We didn't really talk about the forums there at all.
When I mentioned "general consensus" I mentioned that included the internet forums, is about as detailed as I got with them about that.
I got the feeling nobody at the Sony booth knew who I was, but that when I left, they did ;).
I didn't expect them too either, honestly. Good thing is now, I will be in touch with Sony at some level.
Carl
Thanks Carl
For all the information so far, and especially for all your hard and tiring work. I am thinking of an A200 myself, as I need something with better ISO and AF for the hockey I do. It sounds like it will be fine for that, along with being a backup.
It will certainly do until I can get the cash together for an A700 toward the end of this year.
Bestest Wishes

Well done you lucky so-and-so!
Nice crisp report Carl!
Interesting pointers, especially on the feel. Minolta always knew how we like our kit to feel, and Sony haven't decided to change things, or get the body to resemble a jello mould (you know who you are 1D range!).
Of course, the feel ain't worth anything, if the iq is lacking, so the reviews will be interesting to read.
70-300mm G sounds interesting, though UK pricing could be a nightmare. Are we looking at 100-300mm replacement, or a bigger Beercan?
Carl
Wierd => Weird
Page 3, when talking about using liveview dSLRs, you said "wierd" but the word is spelt "weird".
Just a niggle that I always have! Weird stands out amongst other words for it's arcane spelling and misunderstood meaning. It should be protected, to ensure that the English language retains some human elements.

The A200 should please people more overall than the buzz I'm seeing about it now. Guess you can tell I liked it.. darn I was trying to remain objective ;).
No problem on the info, thats my newest role in life now, rather enjoy bringing it to you.
Carl
Thanks Carl
Too early to tell on the Beercan replacement for sure. But do you want my gut instinct on that?
I think this 70-300G is going to be the most popular lens in this focal range for this mount for the new users than past lenses. It may not sell as many copies as the dynamic duo beercan team, but I think its going to get quite a following. I'm getting one asap.
Don't quote me on any of that however, except the fact that I'm getting one. Cant wait to run it through some lens testing.
=)

Weird...
I don't see that anywhere ( grin ).
Than you so much for letting me know. Guess I am human after all heh!

Great Carl
Thanks for the walkthough of Sony's booth. I debated going out there this year too but couldn't figure out a way to make it work so I'm glad you did and appreciate the detail of your remarks of your walkthough.
RE: Weird
That was me - your password email went into my junk mail and I didn't spot it for a few hours.
Only one spelling mistake for such a comprehensive entry was pretty impressive!

Your welcome, just taking one for the team! More to come though! I'm not finished yet. Going to do some "individual" impression break downs on all the equipment I had my hands on. The PMA report is just an overview :)

Hi Stuart
Thanks for coming aboard, really glad to see you here.
I spotted a couple actually, but I guess its not bad considering how much sleep I had, and that I had to basically rewrite a full segment of the report after I put it up here and realized that somehow, a portion was missing. :(
Carl
Not A900. Could you hint?
... please?
... with sugar on top?
Is it 4 numerical digits? that is, an α****? Is it an α*50? Is it an α***? Or an α*? Does it pull a "Prince"; the camera formerly known as the α900? Does it start with even start with an Alpha? Does the professional range start with a different letter?

Well Done Carl!
The a350 has caught my eye as an a100 user but the a900 is still on the top of my list for now. . . I'll have to wait to see how it comes out of the starting gate later this year?
Meanwhile those new lenses sound extremely interesting to me like that 70-300 G lens for under a $1000 has real promise of things to come? I might have to let my BigBeerCan AF 75-300 go and step up to that new one? Though I really like the BBC! You've done a great review of the industrial show for us and I'm looking forward to reading more.

PMA
Excellent review of the event Carl, felt like I was there. I appreciate your time and effort.
Mike
Paul the 70-300G is a steal, talk about quality!
The past is behind us, and while the past has a great heritage and fine products. It was time for a new lens that takes the best of the past and adds the best current technology can afford. The fact that it is that affordable, should put Alpha users in a frenzy. I am writing a hands on review and should have it out early next week. You don't want to miss that.
Thank you again,
Carl
Thank you Carl
Thank you Carl
I read your report of your experience with Sony stuff.
I am very interested in A900 or any name that Sony would choose it later on.
I would like to know have you got any idea that when this flagship camera would come to the market and how much it's price tag would be.
