Ricoh CX3 Review (Full Size Sample Gallery)

Ricoh CX3 10MP CMOS Digital Camera with 10.7x Wide Angle Optical Macro Zoom and 3.0 inch LCD (Black)Point & Shoot Digital Cameras)

Just about every camera maker now has a super zoom compact out in the market, but Ricoh were one of the earlier camera companies to have longer zoom models in the shape of the “Capilio R” models. Over time the R series turned into the “CX” series of cameras, this is the third version sporting the “CX” badge.

Overview

The CX3 is a super zoom compact featuring a 28-300mm equivalent lens as well as the new back-illuminated CMOS sensor which is said to give an improved low light performance. Other features include a new HD video mode, a special DR mode designed to enhance dynamic range, a new improved noise reduction engine, a “Smart Auto” mode, and of course Ricoh's well known and impressive macro which lets you focus on a subject as close as 1cm . Listed below is a specification for the camera in case anyone wants to look in more detail. Whilst I will be looking at some technical areas in this review and features, I'll be trying to give an impression of using the camera and my general thoughts about using the camera day to day.

Any comments on the review peeps?

Ricoh fans that are looking at the review, are you learning anything, thoughts on the review?

Not a Ricoh owner but, I can still educate myself.

Cx3 review

I own a CX3 and a couple of other cameras too and I think it's a good, fair review. You've taken time to actually play with the camera and understand why it is the way it is. Ricoh cameras (cx3) allow you to take back the control and this is a refreshing change from the rest of the pack.
Just a couple of things you didn't touch on (please forgive me if you did!):

Focus bracketing
The CX allows you to bracket focus to an amount you choose! This is an amazing feature and it allows you to decide later which one is best.

Multiple focus exposure
This feature allows the camera to take multiple shots from one shutter release, each shot focussing on different elements of the image. This to is a brilliant feature.

As with other multiple shot features on this camera, a proprietary file format is used but individual files can be extracted and saved right there on your sd card. You don't have to do it on a pc!

Ricoh CX3 review

I'm in the market for a camera to replace my Olympus Stylus 740 which of late is causing me problems connected with the battery usage and I'm finally fed up with recharging - having already paid out for a new one which needs a much too regular recharge. I've looked at reviews for the Panasonic TZ10, Samsung WB650 and Ricoh CX3 and I must say that this review of the Ricoh is the most comprehensive one that I've read. It's been really useful and I've decided after reading it through to buy the Ricoh but will keep the review in my 'favorites' - I have a feeling that it may well be more useful than the manual. Thanks a lot.

Prints size

I started a thread on Dpreview asking how large can you print CX3s files...can Barry or anyone tell me if they print their CX3 photos as large as a S10, S95, GX200 for example..thanks

Great review, thank you very much!

I would like to thank you for this really great and fair review! There are a lot of websites with reviews but your website seems to do the reviews most comprehensive! Its people like you who make the Internet a better place... :-)

Now for the CX3: I have been playing around with different models of the CX series (CX1, CX2, CX3 and CX4 - last one is on the market since September 2010) and I also noticed the CX is a camera you will feel like being "at home" nearly instantly! I think it is a great camera!

I would also like to mention Ricoh is constantliy improving the CX series - this is why there is a successor about every 6 months. Additionally Ricoh is offering frequent firmware updates. This and the fact Ricoh is trying to produce cameras that are a little bit different compared to the whole market, makes Ricoh a really sympathic company!

good review of yet another interesting compact

I didn't read the full report from Barry before, but have wandered the web in search of a Casio P505 replacement. The features on Ricoh's Caplio models were interesting before but IQ was uneven; later SuperCCDs distracted me, and now backlit sensors are trying to boost small-sensor IQ. I always liked 28-200 as a compact zoom range, but I could live with 28-300 I suppose :^) Some of the CX features are surprising, and they have gone unreported by USA review sites that are hard-pressed to find Ricoh models to play with.

Thanks Barry for the details on the CX3 (and while not your dream cam I see the CX4 is out now), and thanks Carl for providing space for user reports!

*Edit/add* - it's weird that http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Ricoh-CX2-vs-Ricoh-CX3-13412 claims the 3 is a good upgrade.. yet I prefer the 2's images on nearly every sample. Even the noise at iso800 wasn't bad. I found a 1/2 price CX2 and am taking the chance, err plunge. Curious cameras, lots of advanced features but not actual exposure controls or RAW. The included software sounds like it can replace 2/3 of my basic stuff though!
