What's up with Tamron...

I think it was a mistake to leave out VC on the upcoming 70-300 given where the cameras are going... They only left it out on the Sony mount and not the Canon and Nikon...They say its beacuse Sony has in-body stabilization, however for movies SSS gets hot and has the 9 minute length limit... With VC (opitcal stabilization) in the lens users would have a choice as to which one to use.... At least Sigma is on board... The 18-250 OS HSM from Sigma might be a very good all-in-one solution for the newer video SLR cameras...

$199 vs. $439, Expensive Sigma vs. Cheap Sony

I'm looking for a normal fast prime and the two options (excluding the super-expensive Minolta 35 f/2 and Sony 35 f/1.4) seem to be:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ($439):
Filter Size 62mm
Minimum Focus Distance 15.7" (40 cm)
Magnification 1:10
Groups/Elements 7/7
Length 2.3" (59mm)
Maximum Diameter 3" (75.5mm)
Weight 15 oz (430 g)

Sony 35mm f/1.8 ($199):
Filter Size 55mm
Minimum Focus Distance 9.05" (23cm)
Magnification Maximum Reproduction Ratio: 1:4
Groups/Elements 5/6
Length 2.05" (52mm)
Maximum Diameter 2.76" (70mm)
Weight 6 oz (170g)

CZ 135/1.8 ...sweet!

....damn I love this lens!

just had to say to someone even out there in virtual land... Just took some photos on the Ragin' Cajun field (UL Lafayette) of my neice (college dance team) for one of her contests... Sony FF sensor+Zeiss 135+ F2 aperture= Yum! ... what more could you possibly want?

I'll post a couple when I finish playing with them...

Plastic Lens Mounts

There has been a lot of complaining over plastic lens mounts lately, so I'm curious: has anyone ever had a plastic mount fail on them? Personally, I love the solid feel and the look of a metal lens mount. Even the sound it makes when you snap it into place is more satisfying than a plastic mount. But, I've been using the 18-70 kit lens and the 70-300 tamron in fairly harsh environments (hiking, ocean spray, dust, etc.) for over two years now and have never had a plastic related problem.

Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM... Could it be any cheaper?

B&H lists the Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM for pre-order at $249!

Yes, it is plastic, it has a SAM motor (it could have no motor for that price), but common... Pending reviews of course, this is an outstanding price for a "no way it can be bad" lens :)

bfitzgerald, I don't think your previous argument "Canon and Nikon both have sub £300 metal mount f1.8 lenses both are well respected and affordable" can apply here.

It is $420, close to double the price of the (yes, slower) SONY. I am sorry you get it so bad in UK paying the US price in pounds :)
